RFID Trends in Libraries™

LAT is very aware of the current trend of Libraries considering RFID technology for implementation. There are multiple reasons for interest in RFID. LAT products support both barcode and RFID technologies. All this considered, LAT strongly recommends that Libraries look long and hard at the following issues before spending large sums of money on RFID:

•Is security of digital circulation material a key priority for implementing RFID tags? If so, is RFID a real solution?

• Is inventory of circulation material a key priority for implementing RFID tags? If so, how real to the library are the benefits?

• Are privacy concerns really important, and if so, how important?

• Can the Library define an ROI model for expenditures on RFID technology, and what does that model reveal?

The answers to the above questions will vary for each Library. Thorough review of these issues will assist in making the best decision for the Library.
